    インターン日記ァMeagan(アメリカ)

My name is Meagan Kearney and I am a rising Junior in college. I was able to intern at Esumi Atelier for 10 days at the start of my Summer. While 10 days went by very quickly, the experiences and knowledge I gained have allowed me to further appreciate Japanese country living and architecture.

Esumi-san tasked me to help with making the furniture and people for a house model and to fix a broken model. Since my experience with model making was limited, it took me the whole 10 days to complete both. However, Yuri-san was very kind and often helped me by teaching me new techniques.

As an intern, I made lunch and dinner for the staff. Coming into this internship, I was not very confident in my cooking skills. However, this opportunity allowed to me make new dishes like Wafu (Japanese style) pasta, Miso-nasu, and Chirashisushi. I also learned how to use the Kamado to cook rice.

During the Weekend, I was able to travel with Esumi-san to many places. First we went to two of his past projects (onsens), then I was able to accompany him to a site-visit to oversee progress on one of his current projects. Through these visits, I was able to see how much consideration Esumi-san puts in his works and the process of communicating with craftsmen.

We also went to the Adachi Museum of Art which has a beautiful garden and both historical and modern works of art. We then went to Matsue to have some tasty Soba and see the Tanabe Museum of Art. I then travelled around Matsue by myself to see the beautiful castle and river.

On Sunday I went to see Izumo-taisha Grand shrine and the Shimane Museum of Ancient Izumo. The Shrine and its area was beautiful and almost magical-like. The museum had many interesting artifacts and the building itself with its garden was breathtaking.

While my time here was short, I will never forget the kindness of Esumi-san, Sato-san and Shimizu-san. I learned so much about the beauty of preserving and respecting the old values of traditional living and architecture. I will never forget Izumo’s magical beauty!
